  4.     Visitors to the quiet confines of the Library of Congress
  5. reading rooms are often left scratching their heads by some
  6. bewildering text. But since last month they have had another reason
  7. for creeping feelings of paresthesia in the cranial zone: head
  8. lice. Library staffers noticed traces of Pediculus humanus capitis
  9. on a newspaper in a periodical reading room. An entomologist
  10. identified the problem and discovered that the little critters had
  11. invaded a nearby theater and music room. All the affected areas
  12. were vacuumed and heavily doused with insecticides, and newspapers
  13. were placed in a refrigerated truck in an attempt to freeze out any
  14. eggs hiding inside. Despite these measures, a second infestation
  15. was found just before Christmas, prompting another visit by the
  16. exterminator. Officials in charge of the anti-bug offensive hope
  17. the library is now free of the little louses, so that scholars can
  18. resume the habit of scratching their heads in thought.
